Overview
When managing data on your emWave2 handheld unit through the emWave software, you will encounter two distinct options for clearing the device: Delete and Wipe. Understanding the technical difference between these two is critical to maintaining your session history and device connectivity.
The “Delete” Function
The Delete function is part of the standard synchronization process.
-
Primary Use: To clear the internal memory of the emWave2 once it reaches its 18-hour storage limit.
-
What happens: It removes the session data (the pulse and coherence information) from the handheld unit, but leaves the Digital ID intact.
-
Why use it: This allows you to keep the device paired with your specific user profile and computer database while freeing up space for new sessions. It is the safe, routine way to manage your device.
The “Wipe” Function
The Wipe function is a more “aggressive” reset found in the Advanced settings of the Sync dialog box.
-
Primary Use: Transferring ownership or resetting the device for a different user.
-
What happens: It erases all session data and the unique Digital ID associated with the device.
-
Why use it: Since the emWave2 software is a single-user program, a device must be “unlinked” from its original Digital ID before it can be correctly associated with a new user or a different computer database.
-
Technical Warning: The Digital ID is randomly created during the first sync. If you Wipe a device, other computers that previously recognized that specific unit will cease to do so. You will have to re-identify the device as if it were brand new.
Summary Comparison
| Feature | Delete | Wipe |
| Removes Sessions? | Yes | Yes |
| Removes Digital ID? | No | Yes |
| Keeps Software Pairing? | Yes | No |
| When to use? | Routine maintenance after syncing. | Giving the device to someone else. |
Important Caution
Before using either function—but especially before a Wipe—ensure you have successfully synced your sessions to the emWave software. Once data is deleted or wiped from the handheld unit, it cannot be recovered unless it was first saved to your computer’s database.
