Overview
If you’re not getting a reliable pulse reading when you start a session with your ear sensor, use the steps below to improve signal detection and accuracy. These suggestions help ensure you get a clear heart rhythm reading on your Heart Rate Variability (HRV) display.
1. Check the Sensor Connection
-
Make sure the ear sensor cable is securely connected to your emWave2 unit or emWave Pro USB/Module. The connector should be fully seated in the port.
-
If you plug in the sensor after starting the software and see a “sensor not found” message, close the software, plug in the sensor, and restart both the software and your computer if needed.
2. Position the Ear Sensor Correctly
-
Attach the sensor directly to your earlobe — ideally the fleshy part closest to your cheek — for the best pulse reading.
-
The sensor detects pulse more easily if your ear is warm. You can warm it by briefly holding it with your hands before clipping it on.
-
Try both earlobes or move the sensor slightly on your earlobe to find the spot with the strongest signal. This may take a few seconds to register with the software.
3. Reduce Movement and Interference
-
The ear sensor is very sensitive. When it’s measuring, try to stay still and quiet — talking, moving, or fidgeting can interfere with the pulse reading.
-
Taking a few deep breaths before attaching the sensor may help you relax and improve signal detection.
4. Use the Lapel Clip
-
Always use the lapel clip to secure the cable to your clothing. This prevents the weight of the cable from pulling on the sensor and causing inconsistent readings or “artifacts” (inaccurate pulses).
-
Leave a bit of slack between the clip and the sensor so you can move your head without tugging on the cable.
5. Technical Tips
-
Use sensors and connectors that were purchased together to ensure compatibility. Mixed or older components may not work reliably.
-
Check for software updates and install them regularly to ensure the best performance.
-
Keep the sensor clean. Gently wipe the part that touches your skin with a soft cloth and a small amount of alcohol to remove oils. Be careful not to get any liquid inside the sensor — this can damage it and void the warranty.
Summary
If your pulse reading isn’t accurate:
-
Check the connection and restart the software if needed
-
Warm and reposition the ear sensor
-
Stay still during the session
-
Use the lapel clip to secure the cable
-
Keep your sensor clean and updated
Following these steps typically improves reading accuracy and ensures a smoother session with your emWave hardware.
