The emWave2 provides audio feedback to guide your session without requiring you to look at the device. These tones indicate your mode, coherence levels, battery status, and achievements.
Startup Indicators
When you first turn on the emWave2, the number of tones indicates the active mode:
-
Two Tones: The device is in Basic Mode.
-
Three Tones: The device is in Advanced Mode.
Coherence Level Feedback
Audio feedback helps you track your state in real-time. By default, a tone sounds every 5 seconds corresponding to your current coherence level:
-
Medium Coherence (Blue): A standard pitch chime.
-
High Coherence (Green): A higher-pitched, ascending chime.
-
Low Coherence (Red): No tone is played on the handheld unit. Note that Low Coherence simply means your rhythm is not yet optimal; it is not a “negative” indicator.
Reward Tones and Achievement
As you maintain coherence, blue bars accumulate on the Heart Action Strip. When these bars reach the top, you will hear a distinct series of reward tones. The strip then resets to the bottom to begin accumulating bars for your next reward.
Battery Alerts
A fully charged emWave2 typically lasts 5 to 6 hours. When the battery is nearly depleted (approximately 2 minutes of use remaining), the device sounds a soft 3-tone chime. This alert repeats with increasing frequency as the power continues to drop.
Managing Audio Settings
On the Handheld Device: To change the volume or mute the device, start a session and wait for the breath pacer lights to begin moving. Press the bottom portion of the sensor button to cycle through four volume levels.
In the emWave Software: When using the emWave2 with the desktop software (Pro or emWave2), you can customize the audio further:
-
Go to Preferences and select the Sounds tab.
-
Adjust the Volume slider or Enable/Disable specific tones.
-
Choose the Chime Frequency: You can set tones to play every 5 seconds or only when your coherence level changes.
-
Use the Sound icon in the lower-right corner of the Session view for quick muting during a live session.
