Understanding Challenge Level Stars in emWave PRO

In the Review Session View of the emWave PRO software, HeartMath uses a star-based rating system to help you quickly identify the settings of your past performances. These icons are located directly under or next to the Coherence Ratio columns in your session history list.

The Star Legend

The number of stars directly corresponds to the Challenge Level selected at the start of that session:

  • One Star (★): Indicates the session was run at Challenge Level 1 (the default starting level for most beginners).

  • Two Stars (★★): Indicates Challenge Level 2.

  • Three Stars (★★★): Indicates Challenge Level 3.

  • Four Stars (★★★★): Indicates Challenge Level 4 (the most advanced setting).

Why Challenge Levels Matter

As you progress through the star levels, the software’s algorithm becomes more sensitive to variations in your heart rhythm.

  1. Lower Levels (1-2 Stars): Provide more “forgiveness,” making it easier to reach green (High Coherence) status as you learn the techniques.

  2. Higher Levels (3-4 Stars): Require a much higher degree of physiological “smoothness.” Even small distractions can cause your coherence level to drop, providing a more rigorous training environment for building resilience.

Reviewing Your Progress

When looking at your session history, pay attention to how your Coherence Ratios (the percentages of Red, Blue, and Green) interact with the stars:

  • If you are achieving 80% or higher Green at 1 star, it may be time to move to 2 stars to continue challenging your nervous system.

  • If your Green percentage drops significantly when moving up a level, it is a sign to continue practicing at your current level until your system stabilizes.
