The Challenge Level setting in emWave Pro determines the mathematical threshold required to achieve Medium and High Coherence. Adjusting these levels allows you to tailor your practice to your current skill level and physiological state.
1. Understanding the Four Levels
As you increase the challenge level, the software requires a more stable and ordered heart rhythm to award coherence points.
-
Level 1 (Low): Ideal for beginners or those practicing while highly stressed. This level focuses on establishing the basic rhythm of heart-focused breathing.
-
Level 2 & 3 (Medium): These levels require more consistent focus and a deeper emotional shift to stay in the “Green” zone.
-
Level 4 (Highest): At this level, paced breathing alone is rarely enough. Success usually requires a genuine, sustained state of positive emotion (such as appreciation, care, or compassion).
2. How to Adjust Your Settings
You can change your challenge level at any time, but it is best to do so before starting a new session.
-
Accessing Preferences: Navigate to the Edit menu (Windows) or the emWave Pro menu (Mac) and select Preferences.
-
Selecting the Level: Under the General tab, locate the Challenge Level section. Choose your desired level from the drop-down menu.
-
User Specificity: If you have multiple users in your database, ensure the correct user is selected, as challenge levels are saved individually per user profile.
3. The “80% Rule” for Progression
The goal of HeartMath training is “emotional muscle building.” To ensure steady progress without causing frustration:
-
Consistency is Key: Do not move up simply because you had one “perfect” session.
-
The Benchmark: Move to the next challenge level only when you can consistently achieve 80% to 90% High Coherence across several sessions.
-
When to Scale Back: If you find yourself consistently in “Low Coherence” (Red) on a higher level, it may create stress rather than reduce it. Drop back down one level to rebuild your baseline and confidence.
4. Impact on Scoring
Changing the challenge level affects how your Coherence Ratio is calculated:
-
At higher levels, the “High Coherence” threshold is raised.
-
An HRV pattern that earns a “High” score on Level 1 might only earn a “Medium” or “Low” score on Level 3.
-
Your Achievement Score will accumulate more slowly at higher levels unless you are able to maintain a very high degree of coherence.
